Semrush vs Ahrefs in 2026: what you actually pay

Semrush vs Ahrefs threads always turn into feature worship. The thing that actually decides it for most people is simpler: what you pay, what you’re allowed to do at that price, and whether you can try it before the money leaves. Here’s that version, with current 2026 numbers.

Price, tier by tier

Comparable rungs side by side, monthly list price (annual-billing price in parentheses), as of 2026-10-05:

The pricing differences that matter

  • Trials: Semrush offers a 7-day trial on every paid plan; Ahrefs offers none — its pricing page flatly says it never runs discounts. With Ahrefs you pay full price to find out if you like it. That single fact changes the risk math more than any feature.
  • Free tiers exist on both, and they’re narrow: a free Semrush account gets 10 reports a day and one demo project; Ahrefs Free covers limited Site Explorer and Site Audit for sites you own. Useful for a quick look, not for ongoing competitor research.
  • Entry price is close, limits aren’t: Ahrefs Lite ($129) tracks 750keywords; Semrush’s entry SEO plan ($139) tracks 500. Ahrefs gives more tracked keywords at the bottom rung, but throttles its cheaper tiers with a monthly credit system (1,000 credits per user per month on Lite; unlimited from Standard up) — heavy use burns through it. Ahrefs also sells a $29 Starter plan for keyword and competitor lookups, but it has no rank tracking, so it isn’t in the table above.
  • Semrush restructured its lineup: the old Pro/Guru/Business plans are gone, replaced by SEO / Starter (with AI-search tracking) / Pro+ / Advanced. If you read an older comparison quoting “Semrush Pro $129,” it’s out of date.
  • Annual billing: both advertise “save up to 17%” for paying yearly. Semrush SEO drops to $117/mo, Ahrefs Lite to $108/mo.

What each is actually best at

Ahrefs is still the backlink-index benchmark — the largest, freshest link database, and the cleanest UX for link research and content gap analysis. If backlinks and competitor link-building are the core of your work, Ahrefs earns its price.

Semrush is the broader marketing suite: keyword and rank tracking plus PPC research, content tools, local SEO, social, and now AI-search visibility tracking. It’s the better pick if you want one tool covering more than links — and the trial lets you confirm that before committing. Try Semrush free (7-day trial) and decide on your own data.

Do you even need either?

Honest answer for a lot of smaller sites: not yet. Google Search Console gives you real query and ranking data for free, and tools like SE Ranking, Mangools or Serpstat deliver 80% of what you’d use at a third of the price. Semrush and Ahrefs are worth their premium when competitor research and a deep backlink index are central to how you work — not as a default first purchase. Run your real limits through the SEO tool calculator before paying for either.

Compare the whole field

The SEO tool cost calculator ranks Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz, SE Ranking, Mangools, Serpstat and Ubersuggest by what they cost for the limits you actually need — free Google baseline included. Budgeting for a whole site? Managed WordPress hosting, ranked by real price and LLM API pricing for AI content tools cover the other two big line items.

Methodology: prices are official list prices, refreshed weekly and date-stamped. Ahrefs has no affiliate program; Semrush does (disclosed in the footer) — it never changes our numbers or which tool we say fits your case. We tell smaller sites to start free or cheap regardless.

FAQ

Is Semrush or Ahrefs cheaper in 2026?

At the entry rung Ahrefs Lite ($129/month) vs Semrush SEO ($139/month); Ahrefs tracks 750 keywords to Semrush's 500, but Lite caps each user at 1,000 credits a month. Ahrefs also sells a $29 Starter plan with no rank tracking. Both advertise up to ~17% off for annual billing.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts and offers no free trial on paid plans; the only free option is Ahrefs Free (limited Site Explorer and Site Audit for your own sites). Semrush offers a 7-day free trial on paid plans and a free account limited to 10 reports a day.

Do small sites need Semrush or Ahrefs?

Often not at first. Google Search Console gives real query and ranking data for free, and cheaper tools such as SE Ranking, Mangools or Serpstat cover most day-to-day needs. The premium tools earn their price when competitor and backlink research are central to your work.
